How Organizing Helps Clients Navigate Big Life Changes
Career change, divorce, perimenopause, empty nest—those are some of the big life changes my clients are going through.
Having been trained in Marie Kondo's method of organizing, I can definitely say there's "life-changing magic" in tidying up. But it's not always easy to do it alone. I can help!
Why Organize When Life Itself Feels So…Unorganized?
Decluttering to let go of the past and surrounding yourself with what sparks joy can be life changing. My clients find themselves feeling lighter as they thank and release items that are no longer serving them. It's an exhale. Plus, surrounding yourself with what sparks joy creates a peaceful and uplifting space where you can make plans for your future.
Change of Any Kind Often Requires Some Organization
If you're struggling with a big life change, your home is likely in disarray. Maybe you're holding onto that wardrobe that is a size or two too small in the hopes you'll get back into it. Or you've got a spare bedroom filled with unfinished projects and "just in case" items. Or you have stacks and stacks of paper you've been meaning to go through. For years. Taking the time to sort through all this stuff can have a cathartic effect. It can help you let go of the past and prepare for the future.
When You’re Feeling Unsure, Start with Systems You Know
As Marie Kondo would say, it's not actually about getting rid of things. It's about identifying what sparks joy for you. Start by thinking about what kind of life you want to live in your home once you’ve finished tidying up. That's your touchstone.
Release Yourself from Expectations; Be Okay with Just Enough
If you're thinking this is about creating an Instagram pic-worthy space, it's not. It's about putting in place structures and systems that work for you. It's about working with whatever storage you already have (shoeboxes, anyone?), rather than buying all the pretty boxes, bins and storage systems. There's an exhale right there.
Sorting, Purging, and Culling the Clutter Can Be Self-Care
Transitions can be hard. Be kind to yourself. I always encourage clients to treat the tidying festival like a ceremony. Light candles, sip tea, put on music that soothes or energizes you. And take breaks! A tidying festival can serve as a rite of passage to ease your way from one stage of life to another.
I know what it's like to be busy, to feel overwhelmed by the state of your home, and to wonder if clearing the clutter would help you with your transition. It certainly helped me. That's why I love helping other women declutter and organize their homes so that they can exhale and explore the next exciting chapter of their lives.
